Ebay is so big that it is almost a sub-internet. There is more material written about Ebay than just about any other entity on the web. You can't walk into a book store and gets an idiots guide to Yahoo, but you CAN find almost 100 books and e-books about Ebay.

So, I'm not going to review Ebay. The truth is, using Ebay is very, very straight forward.  It has to be, otherwise the millions of computer illiterate people that use the Auction wouldn't be able to sell their wares.

Having successful auctions on a consistent basis is another story.

However, the secret to making a living on Ebay has been discovered.

Ready?

Sell what's selling, write great sales copy, be customer oriented and back end your customers with other products.

Duh.

Folks, I GUARANTEE YOU that the above paragraph (not the "Duh", further up) is almost exactly what almost every system that I have read is saying.

So what's the Real Key?

Deep Analysis. Tah Da!

The Number One question that I get about Ebay is "What Should I Sell?". My Standard Response is "Sell what people are BUYING."

People Hate that response.  Can you guess what their next question is?

"Well then, what are people BUYING?"

Yesssss.....Well Done.

Here is how you find what people are buying on Ebay...

Use a program called Deep Analysis. Here is what it does.

You enter an Ebay category number into the Deep Analysis search field and it CRAWLS through Ebay and compiles a list of all the auctions in that category.  It then places them into a spreadsheet/database that contains sortable fields so you can list the category information anyway you want.  You can sort by number of bids, number of sales, Amount of Goods Sold, Dutch Auctions, Seller names, and Highest Bid Amount.

Amazing.

You can also enter a Keyword into the search field, say, Beanie Babies and crawl Ebay for Auctions that contain that Item.

You have the option of choosing "Current" or "Completed" Auctions and you can search as few as 100 auctions or, if you've got some time and a fast internet connection, search ALL OF THEM.

Wanna see if there is an Ebay market for Paintball Guns? Type Paintball Gun into the search field, sit back, relax and in a few minutes you will see all of the auctions that have Paintball Guns in them, if they sold, for how much, if their was a reserve, etc.

How Cool is that?

Let me give you an example of how this helped Audrey's business.

When we first started Ebay, we were getting about a 10% sell rate.  Our prices were good, the products were VERY COOL, but we were not getting the success we thought we should have.

Using Deep Analysis, we saw what our most successful competitor was doing, and tested some of those Techniques.  Basically, we started all of our auctions at $.99 and put a reserve in them.  We sold more, like more than 30% more.

Why?  You see, multiple bids add the perception of value and many more people are inclined to bid when the product starts off cheap.  In their heart of hearts, they think that they may be able to weasel in on the DEAL OF A LIFE TIME!.  They are not the ones that end up buying but no matter, when there are bids on an item, the real buyers look as well. And that is where we increase our Ebay sales.

Incidentally, even though Ebay has put the Kybosh on Advertising your site in their auctions, we still try and get away with it as much as possible. (Like Putting it in our location field, or adding a watermark to your item picture).

One of the benefits of having a reserve as low as $.99 on an item that will sell for $250 is that we get MASSIVE PAGE VIEWS of our auctions.  One Item very recently got 777 views in one auction cycle.  This was for an Item that sold for over $199.  That means that 777 people saw not only our auction, not only our clever sales copy, not only our keen guarantee - they also saw our store's address.  Yeah Baby!

None of these little tid bits would have been possible so fast with out Deep Analysis.  Not only did it school us about setting price, but it also gave us clear direction on which products were selling, what their selling price thresholds were, and what products not to waste our time on.

  • It saved us time - (Can you imagine poking through Ebay to find information on 20 auctions?  How about 2000?)

  • It saved us money - (It's easy to tell what products are not selling with D.A., so we didn't waste any money on listing fees or finding an source for a product that's a dud)

  • It made us money - (Sell what People are Buying... Now we know what people are buying)

Unless you have truckloads of one-of-a-kind baseball cards, civil war era sabers, or chrome Harley Parts that cost you pennies on the dollar, you MUST find out what's selling on Ebay.

Figure that out, find a source for it, and open a bank account.

We stated using Deep Analysis August 3rd.

We figured out what to sell and how to price it August 5th.

We found a good source for it on August 13th-

and made money on our first DA researched auction on August 16th.

Our 30 day trial of the software had not even ended.
